Why do politicatians go on about how much they love america but don't know their history?

As a professional historian, It really ticks me off when these politicians talk about their love for America and yet they get the simplest of knowledge wrong. Like when Michele Bachman said the Founding Fathers ended slavery and not knowing in the Constitution it says a slave is worth 3/5 a person. Or more recently Sarah Palin getting Paul Revere's ride wrong. Or the president once saying we had 57 states, its all over the political spectrum. This is not ment to be a political debate between right and left plz just keep it within the realm of the question.
